ABOUT US
OUR STORY
NEMS Community Benefit Services is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to providing health and social care services to the people of Nottinghamshire.
We leverage close collaborative partnerships with several other health and social care providers from Nottinghamshire, building integrated pathways of care and ensuring an all-around positive patient experience.
NEMS originated from a GP co-op called Nottingham Emergency Medical Services, which was founded in 1998 and facilitated out-of-hours GP services in Nottingham City and South Nottinghamshire. This co-operative was re-formed into NEMS Community Benefit Services in 2004 to deliver the same services when a new GMS contract allowed GPs to opt out of 24-hour responsibility for their patients.
Over time, NEMS has formed close partnerships with a wide range of other health and social care institutions across Nottinghamshire, and its scope of services has evolved to include streamed primary care services at Emergency Departments, Integrated Urgent Care, and a Clinical Assessment Service.
Today, NEMS serves a population of more than 1million patients in Nottingham and the surrounding area, and maintains facilities in Station Street Nottingham, Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham, Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Newark Hospital. Our 350+ strong workforce is made up of 180+ substantive staff, 130+ sessional GPs and 50+ agency workers.
OUR VALUES
Though NEMS has been part of the Nottinghamshire healthcare community for nearly 25 years, we’ve always operated according to a core set of values that have guided every decision we’ve made:
Getting it Right from the Patient’s Perspective:
We go to great lengths to ensure that all the work we do is as safe, efficient, and effective as possible, ensuring patients get the treatments they need quickly and experience efficient and timely care from all our clinicians.
Being an Active Part of the Community:
Since our founding, we’ve actively harnessed the commitment, knowledge, and skills of local people and entities who understand the unique healthcare needs in the local population.
Working with the Right People:
We’re dedicated to getting great health outcomes for our patients, and we know these start with our staff. NEMS strives to hire enthusiastic, creative, and flexible staff with a passion for solving problems and delivering quality care to patients.
Close Collaboration with Other Healthcare Providers:
We maintain strong working partnerships with other Nottinghamshire health and social care providers through co-location, system integration, and direct collaboration to improve patient experiences.
Constantly Improving Services Through Frontline Engagement:
We pride ourselves on being a proactive, forward-thinking organisation, that constantly improves our services by actively listening to our patients, staff, commissioners, and partners.

MEET THE TEAM
Lucy Dadge
Chief Executive
About Lucy
I am delighted to become NEMS Chief Executive. I have worked in the NHS for much of my career, and also in the private sector and Civil Service. I have held Director roles in commissioning and provider organisations in the East Midlands, as well as Non Executive roles in housing and education in Nottinghamshire.
I have always had the highest regard for NEMS, both for it’s people and the unique way in which it provides urgent care services to those most in need.
It is a privilege to become part of NEMS, recognising its adaptable, agile and innovative style. I very much look forward to supporting NEMS in continuing to grow as a key partner in the Nottinghamshire Health and Care system.
Ali Buchanan
Clinical Director
About Ali
I joined NEMS in 2018, having spent several years as a nurse in varied clinical environments. My work for NEMS is shaped by my experiences working overseas in humanitarian aid, conflict and crisis.
I chose NEMS as we promote and value diversity, courage and unconventional approaches to care. Through these distinct qualities, we are able to identify and prioritise care for some of the most vulnerable patients in the community.
Nita Mandhar
Medical Director
About Nita
After graduating from Barts and The London Medical School I joined the GP training scheme in Nottingham and have subsequently worked at NEMS in various urgent care settings.
Working as a GP locally, I have a thorough understanding of the care needs of our local population and aim to direct our service to provide the best care in the out of hours setting.
Neil Morton
Director of Finance and
Corporate Services
About Neil
I joined NEMS Community Benefit Services as Director of Business Improvement and Finance in May 2021. Prior to taking my role at NEMS, I worked within the NHS for 15 years in both Acute Trusts in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and within a CCG environment for the last four years.
Earlier in my career, I also worked for a local authority and a manufacturing organisation, and I enjoy using the breadth of experiences obtained within the private and public sectors to ensure we deliver the best level of service for the patients we treat.
Angela Sbardella-Walton
Director of Operations
About Angela
I have worked at NEMS for 20 years, building my experience across a variety of operational roles. I chose to work at NEMS because I value the commitment to patient-centred care that I see across the whole organisation, and how we constantly adapt to deliver a high standard of service.
OUR FACILITIES
Platform One
Platform One is the nerve centre of NEMS Community Benefit Services, and is located in the heart of Nottingham, near Nottingham Train Station.
The facility is equipped with spacious consulting and treatment spaces ideal for several clinical presentations typically delivered as part of our GP out of hours service, as well as a clinical telephone assessment centre.
Situated in central Nottingham, Platform One is easily accessible via public transport, and has ample free parking on the premises.
This facility serves as NEMS’ head office, hosting an IT server room and a hub for our vehicle fleet. Though our Primary Care in Emergency Department and NEMS Pathways services are delivered from a base within Nottingham University Hospitals Queen’s Medical Centre, they’re managed and facilitated from Platform One.
PC24
PC24 is a dedicated facility within Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, an acute general district hospital that serves Mid Nottinghamshire, and parts of Derbyshire and Lincolnshire.
Well-equipped with spacious treatment spaces and consulting rooms, PC24 is mainly used for 24-hour assessment and triage of patients with urgent primary care conditions, admitted via a “single front door” system that’s shared with Kings Mill Hospital Emergency Department. NEMS also operates an out of hours GP service co-located at PC24.
Queen’s Medical Centre
Patients cannot choose to be seen by NEMS at this location, but you will be directed here if you present at the Emergency Department and the hospital staff assess your condition as being suitable for NEMS.
Newark Urgent Treatment Centre
You will be directed here by NEMS clinicians if you live in the Newark area and contact 111 with an urgent clinical need.
