Research At NEMS
At NEMS we are committed to supporting high-quality health and care research that improves services for people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Research helps us understand what works best in real life, from improving access to urgent and primary care, to testing new treatments, technologies and ways of delivering healthcare. By taking part, patients and communities can help shape the future of NHS care.
We are building our research capacity so that more people can hear about, access and take part in opportunities to support NIHR and other approved clinical research studies.
Research For Everyone
We want research at NEMS to reflect the communities we serve.
We welcome interest from people of all ages, backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, faiths, genders, abilities and life experiences. You do not need previous research experience to find out more or consider taking part. Some studies may be especially looking for people with a particular health condition, experience, age group or background. Each study has its own eligibility criteria, and the research team will explain these clearly before you decide whether to take part. Taking part in research is always voluntary. Choosing not to take part will not affect the care or treatment you receive from NEMS or any other NHS service.
Current Opportunities
Some studies allow people to register their interest or self-refer directly. Information about these studies is available below.

What Does Taking Part Involve?
Every study is different. Depending on the study, you may be asked to complete a questionnaire, take part in an interview, use an app or device, provide a sample, attend an appointment, or try a new approach to care.
Before you decide, you will be given information about the study and have the opportunity to ask questions. You can take time to consider your decision and discuss it with family, friends, carers or a healthcare professional if you wish.
You can change your mind at any time. If you decide to withdraw from a study, this will not affect your usual care.
Our Commitment To You
NEMS is developing research in a way that is safe, inclusive and centred on patients and communities. We aim to:
- Make research opportunities easier to find and understand.
- Involve people from across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
- Work with community groups and partners to reduce barriers to participation.
- Provide information in accessible formats wherever possible.
- Support patients to ask questions and make informed choices.
- Protect privacy and handle personal information in line with applicable data-protection requirements.
- Ensure studies hosted or supported by NEMS have appropriate approvals and governance arrangements.
Help Shape Research At NEMS
You do not have to take part in a clinical study to make a difference. We are also keen to hear from patients, carers and members of the public who would like to help shape how research is planned, communicated and delivered. Your views can help us make research more relevant, accessible and welcoming for local communities.
Join Our Research Patient Advisory Group
We are creating a NEMS Research Patient Advisory Group to help us improve how we involve and communicate with patients about research. We would love to hear from anyone aged 18+ who lives in Nottingham or Nottinghamshire and has experience of urgent or primary care services, such as NHS 111, an urgent treatment centre, A&E, out-of-hours care or GP services.
No research experience is needed. We particularly welcome people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, people with disabilities or long-term conditions, and carers (including parents of young children). You could help by sharing your experiences, reviewing patient information and advising us on how to make research more accessible and inclusive.
We will reimburse agreed travel expenses and recognise your time and contribution in line with our involvement arrangements.
